Gastric Sleeve Surgery: The Long-Term Cure for Obesity
If you’re struggling with obesity and it is affecting your health adversely you will be glad to know there are surgical solutions to help you lose weight and keep the weight off long-term.
Obesity causes multiple health problems from endocrine disorders to heart disease and respiratory problems and if severe can prevent a person from participating in normal life activities such as going for a walk, going to work or even managing personal care. It’s a vicious cycle because lack of exercise causes premature death (Oxford University researchers say that 676,000 early deaths of European men and women are caused by lack of physical activity) but people with obesity may find it difficult to be active.
Gastric sleeve surgery may be an answer. Gastric sleeve surgery is an operation to remove a portion of the stomach, leaving a ‘sleeve’ around the size of a banana that connects the oesophagus to the small intestines. This sleeve can only hold a small amount of food which means that you will only be able to eat small amounts of food after surgery and this will help you control eating urges and lose weight.
Doctors at Claraspital in Basel in Switzerland reported that patients in their clinic lost an average of 61.5% of their excessive body weight in the first year after surgery and this remained stable so that by five years after surgery, the amount of weight kept off was 57.4%. The encouraging results show that a gastric sleeve operation can be used as a stand-alone procedure instead of gastric bypass.
